Location/Directions:
To access campus from the south/east: Hwy 90 to west 12/18 (signs clearly posted). From 12/18 go north on S. Park Street, which crosses all major streets into downtown, including Washington, Johnson, University, and Langdon. Park dead ends on campus next to the Union Theatre. (Signs to UW campus are clearly posted.) To access campus from the airport: Exit the airport and turn left (south) on Packers Avenue, which eventually turns into Johnson and then Gorham Streets. Gorham goes directly to campus and turns into University Avenue. (Signs to UW campus are clearly posted.) Mapquest map of the Pyle Center. Within walking distance of Pyle Center. Though the reserved rooms have been released, the hotel has space available at the below rates--mention the BWWC. Howard Johnson offers free shuttle service to and from the airport--contact the hotel for futher information. Room rates are $89/night single occupancy, $99/night for double or more. Reservations for dinner are recommended, and for the most popular places on the list, it’s best to reserve a few days in advance (I’ve included the phone numbers of these popular restaurants (area code 608)). Restaurants on State Street with street addresses in the 400s, 500s, and 600s are closer to the Lowell Inn, Friederick Center, and Howard Johnson’s. Those on State Street with lower numbers are closer to the capitol but not more than a mile or so from the Howard Johnson and Lowell. Key: $--most entrees $15 and under; $$-- most entrees $15-$20; $$$-- most entrees $20-30 These are dinner prices. Adjust accordingly for lunch. (stick to the specials) Harvest, 21 N. Pinckney (on the square) -- $$/$$$ -- French and American cuisine with an emphasis on local, organic ingredients. 255-6075. Himal Chuli, 318 State Street -- $ -- Himalayan; more casual than Chautara but just as delicious. Many vegetarian options here. The combination platter is a great choice for a first visit. Kennedy Manor, 1 Langdon Street-- $$/$$$ -- Specialties include house-cured salmon, risotto, beef tenderloin. 256-5006. Luigi’s, 102 King Street -- $/$$ -- Italian food in a casual setting. Madison Masala, 115 State Street -- $ -- Indian cuisine in a relaxing setting (with Hookahs!) Noodles and Co., 232 State -- $ -- a variety of Italian, Spicy, and Asian noodle dishes. The Radical Rye, 231 State Street -- $ -- Enormous and delicious deli sandwiches on freshly baked bread. Restaurant Magnus, 120 E. Wilson (near the square) -- $$$ -- Largely South American; unusual and interesting menu. 258-8787. Sita’s Kitchen, University Square (on campus a block from State St.) -- $ -- Himalayan restaurant. Friendly service, numerous vegetarian items. Try the veggie momo. Subway, 1462 State St. Sunroom, 638 State Street -- $ -- Eclectic menu with many vegetarian items; might be crowded at lunchtime Tornado Club, 116 S. Hamilton (off the square) -- $$$ -- Excellent steaks; venison is also a specialty. 256-3570. Tutto Pasta, 305 State Street -- $ -- wide variety of pastas at a reasonable price; open late. Vientiane Palace, 151 W. Gorham (just off State St.)--$-$$; great Lao-Thai cuisine, many vegetarian options. My favorites are the curry squash and the Lao Noodles Kee Mow. Delicious spring rolls. Wasabi, 449 State Street - $/$$ - Japanese;
good sushi, habachi and teriyaki dishes; noodles.
