Some official statistics concerning worldwide migration patterns are
examined & their implications discussed, especially as regards the
situation in Italy. Traditionally, Italians emigrated to northern
Europe & the US; today, there is increasing immigration into Italy from
Asia & Africa. This situation has given rise to new problems, relative
to the sociocultural integration of immigrants, illegal immigrants,
black market labor, & political refugees. Research on these problems is
hampered by the difficulty of obtaining accurate data concerning the
foreign presence; & it seems that the public has not yet become aware
of the magnitude of the immigration phenomenon & its possible social
effects. 9 Tables. Modified HA (Copyright 1988, Sociological Abstracts,

Preliminary findings of a study of foreign immigrant workers in the
Campania region of Italy are reported. Data were obtained from official
statistical sources & interviews with key witnesses (N not given). The
principal countries of origin of the immigrants were: the Cape Verde
Islands, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Tunisia, Egypt,
Morocco, Gabon, & the Ivory Coast. The hypothesis that the rigidity of
local labor demand is the determining factor in the influx of migration
is not supported; instead, a complex model has emerged, in which
certain demographic & territorial variables, especially sex & place of
origin, are important. M immigrants are generally African & work on
farms or as peddlers or construction workers; almost all are illegal. F
immigrants are more likely to be legal, generally work as maids, & come
from Asia, non-Arabic areas of Africa with Christian traditions, or
former colonies of Latin countries. Modified HA (Copyright 1988,

Statistical data from the Italian Ministry of the Interior are analyzed to
assess characteristics of F migration from African & Asian countries to
Italy, focusing on the high concentration of migrants to the Rome area.
Although large numbers of resident visas are granted for family- or
study-related purposes, the two most prominent categories remain: (1)
those granted for religious reasons (many of the immigrants arriving
from countries with at least a strong Catholic minority), & (2) work
visas, filling an apparent demand for domestic labor. Further analysis
indicates that immigrant domestic workers often initiate chain
migration of families & connections; such immigrants settle primarily
in urban areas & are chiefly concentrated in central Italy. Direct
interviews were also conducted with 100 African & Asian women working
in Rome; although over 50% had at least a secondary school education,
97.1% were employed as domestics, with only 73.6% having a regular
working contract, & some 70% working more than 10 hours a day. Despite
these conditions & the additional difficulty of finding housing, the
guarantee of employment is viewed as a strong incentive for increasing
numbers of migrant women. 3 Tables. Modified HA (Copyright 1984,
