Course Requirements
All students will be expected to contribute to discussion, complete the short papers, participate in a small group project, and take a final exam. The final will be open books and notes, which you will complete online and email to me as an attachment within the time limits. Details about these assignments will be available on the class web page as the semester progresses.
Small Group Project
I will assign each of you to a group focused on minorities and advertising. Each group will devise their own approach to gathering examples and analyzing them. The worlds of broadcast, cyberspace and print media should offer a multitude of examples for the presentations in class. A selection of recent newsstand periodicals will be distributed in class which will form part of the basis for your work. The presentations should be done in Microsoft PowerPoint format with a copy to be submitted the day you present. Groups will divide the work amongst themselves and the best presentations will show evidence of having been assembled over the semester. The presentations will be scheduled for May. 1, 3 and 8th should be in the 15-20 minute range. Groups need to select one person to be their reporter and this person should provide me with an outline of their work by Mar 27.
Graduate students will be required to complete an additional paper and make a short presentation on their work in class. Graduate students will need to make an appointment to discuss this requirement as soon as possible.
