Student Responsibilites
Your assigned responsibilities: Your first responsibility is to keep up with the readings. We also will read from the popular press and view several videos in order to discuss current controversies and debates about mass media and minorities. So your second responsibility is to keep up with news, especially news involving minorities. The class will be conducted, as much as possible, through class discussion. Your third responsibility, therefore, is to be ready to contribute to class discussions. The course webpage is one of your greatest assets and you are expected to consult it regularly as it will contain any updated information about guest lectures, etc. You will also need information on the webpage in order to complete the course requirements.
Guest Lecturers:
During the semester a number of guest lecturers will
address the class. The dates and speakers are subject to change. All changes will be reflected on the
Journalism 662 web site. For each guest speaker, think about questions and comments you are
curious about. The questions will grow out of our class discussions, the required
readings, and your regular observation of the media. The speakers have been a highlight in
the past classes and should fill this role again.
The responses to my invitations to speak were overwhelmingly positive. These media professionals and scholars are interested in talking with you about their chosen topic. Many of the speakers cited the opportunity to hear from students as their primary reason for agreeing to come. So lets not disappoint them. If, after reviewing the syllabus, you know of someone who would add a dimension to our class discussions, please alert me (especially if you know them and could help make the introduction though this is not necessary).
